Why We Should Stop Watching Porn?

Updated: May 20

Yes, you heard it right. We should stop watching porn because it is like any drug which can get you addicted no matter, how young, dumb, or broke you are because no matter what, you will always be able to access internet porn anywhere and anytime. Well, that is the kind of comfort we always dream of getting but then is watching porn helping us? Absolutely not. Of course, it can give you the perfect orgasm you always wish you can get but isn't it all virtual and not real at all. I know what you would be thinking of as if you haven't watched porn? Yes, I have watched many times, just like a normal human being because the way our society has been built up, we always consider sex as taboo, and people can go, Ew! What rubbish are you talking about, is this what your parents have told you to do and many more opposite reactions to something biologically designed to do.

But then, there always comes a moment when you hold on to yourself and think, what are you doing and it was that moment when I realized that I should not watch something so virtual at all. Let's talk about facts. According to research, it is proved that 75% to 90% of the people search for porn because of 3 reasons:

1. You are just so curious to know what exactly happens in the porn that people always talk about it. I was one of them in the beginning.

2. You want to improve your sexual skills and knowledge. It was me after a certain point when the curiosity was out of the picture.

3. You want to increase your sexual enjoyment and interest in sex. This was the last point and then I stopped. I stopped not because all the 3 reasons were over but due to many other reasons.

I think most of the people who have watched porn must have searched because of any of the above reasons but the question is was it needed? It does enough brain damage since the very first time you watch it till the point you find yourself as of now. My mother is an amazing home-maker and she spends most of the time watching reality shows on Television. So, there was India's Got Talent which used to come every weekend. I had to watch with her because when it used to be her time of watching television nobody can ask her for the remote control (**it's the rule of mostly Indian homies**). So, I watched it once and seeing small kids showing great talent on the show and I couldn't bear it for more than 20 minutes. After that, I was cooking but my brain was somewhere else. What was going on in my brain was, "What talent I have that I could have shown on T.V. if I would have been there?" Now I just watched it for 20 minutes and it got my brain thinking about it for the next 2-3 hours because I was looking into various talent, I thought I have but ended up canceling all my choices.

It got me moving that I spend so much time thinking of something which was on national television and we all know how unrealistic it is. Now imagine your brain when it watches porn on an average of 3 times a day. It can get you thinking of various possibilities of how you can enjoy your sex life. Our body has the smartest minds, once it gets to know about something you have accomplished, it releases 'Pleasure hormones' known as 'Dopamine'. It's not released only after you enjoy some time alone watching porn but it can be released on very small things as well. Imagine you are craving for Pizza and you get one, how do you feel? You feel extremely happy and this happens every time your cravings are fulfilled. Similarly, if you have done an excellent workout of 30 minutes, it makes you feel great about yourself and poof! Dopamine is released. In the same way, when you watch porn, it releases Dopamine which makes you extremely happy and satisfied.

But why do we end up watching the next time again? It is because Dopamine creates 'Reward Pathways' in Stratum, part of the brain. These pathways induce the person to watch it again because obviously, you felt completely different the first time. The more you watch porn, the deeper these pathways become which connects it to the nervous system and your body reacts likewise, and accomplishment again. Studies have shown that watching more porn also reduces the frontal region of the brain, The CEO (**known as gray matter**). It isn't healthy at all; it creates an illusion in the mind that there is no difference between the virtual world we see on our mobile screens or laptops. Now, this is a very critical path because it makes us think about appearances, sexual curiosity, display of affection, and sexual performance of not only ourselves but of our partner(s) also (**if there is/are any**). This affects their real loving relationship.

It has been proved that people who are exposed to pornography feel that they love their partners less than those who haven't viewed it. Quite obvious, after minutes or hours of watching porn, we tend to have a completely different attitude towards real-life sex thinking it has to be that perfect. But it can't be exactly like you just saw on the internet, it is completely different from that. Porn tends to show that the virtual world is filled with endless sex and the users tend to feel the same way because it is shot like that. Little did we know that the reality is just the opposite to that.

Pornography can also cause 'Hypo frontality' which starts affecting the personalities of the people. This can lead to dissatisfaction from intercourse from the partner which in turn can lead to delay in gratification and compulsive behavior. We tend to become sad with the present relationships and people will run to internet porn for better experiences. It takes a toll on the ability of the person to offer real, meaningful, and selfless love to their partner. Nowadays, we have a different opinion about the relationship. Majorly, if a guy dating a girl asks her to come to their flat or apartment and the girl says yes, the question that goes on in his mind on average is, 'Will she have sex with me?' Is this what can be derived from this, but it is not just guys but even girls tend to think of the same because yes everyone has their own physical needs. Most of the relationships nowadays end up in sex even sooner than we can think of, but is that the purpose of being in any kind of relationship?

It is not only the case of all singles out there, but even people in relationship or marriage can also get affected by watching porn. If they tend to watch porn instead of enjoying the experience with their partners, it means their relationship is turning on a different road. This leads to the next concern. The preferences of people have changed from the 1900s to till date, earlier soft porn used to be 80% of the search history of people watching porn but since the human mind kind of got 'used to' to that kind of pornography, it led to a different kind of abusive and hardcore porn. We can easily see the dominance of one sex on another, majorly male dominance on females, and most of the people like watching that and tending to replicate that in the real-life sex. Isn't this objectifying the women or men in a different unacceptable way? Why would anybody in love want to create sadomasochistic themes in their bedrooms? Of course, unless there is consent from both ends but once done, won't it happen often? If something like that happens frequently, won't it make any of the partners feel frustrated about it?

Yes, it will. But this is just not in their homes, it leads to prostitution as well. Many of the men who watch this kind of abusive porn, tend to replicate it on prostitutes which increases the demand of women who are ready to do that. Look into a documentary of prostitutes, you will find most of them telling how sadistic the men become and leave them in scares and extreme pain. Disgusting. It is human nature; I don't blame it on those men but I blame it to the porn industry. The kind of videos made now has led it to these circumstances because the men like them can be outrageous when it comes to fulfilling their sexual fantasy which they see on screens. It is all the brain which is enabling behaviors like that. How do those prostitutes come into the picture? It is through Human Trafficking. The Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) has defined Trafficking as a commercial sex act that is induced by force, coercion, and person induced to perform acts that have not attained the age of 18 years. Remember the word, very important Coercion.

There is a basic concept of Supply-Demand which is fulfilled here, the porn sites create the demand of such sexual activity and the pimps create the supply through those women who are ready to subject themselves to animals like them. We all know what is the extent of human trafficking around the globe. Every time we click on such videos to watch it, there is one woman somewhere around the world who is trafficked. It is because all the data from those porn sites are seen by suppliers and they understand the needs of the human body, hardcore intercourse. I have seen in Delhi many cases of women picked up from anywhere and sold to somebody. Are we some materialistic things which you can buy for your own sexual needs? I know the answer to this, it is consent. Usually, this is coercion which is defined based on how weak, poor, and helpless that women are in her life. We all have seen across news like these very often.

There is an interesting discovery here. India is leading. It is leading in the world porn consumption amidst this lockdown. There have been 95% increase in the traffic since the day the lockdown has been announced. Now, what happens to those porn sites. We all know they have been earning tremendously through these videos. Their annual income is equivalent to the income Myntra might be making yearly. In 2018, it has been seen that 5,517,000,000 hours of porn consumed on the world's largest porn sites which is combined traffic of Netflix, Amazon, and Twitter for 4 months only. My eyes couldn't understand how much will it make for the very first time. Now imagine the income they might be making out of those videos which we all know is so fake.

Yes, all of the content we have been watching is like a film, not exactly like a film which takes years to shoot but then a 45-minute video takes around 3 days of shooting starting from directing, thinking of the storyline, filming, lighting, makeup and making sure, their make up justifies the title of the video. It involves perfect bodies (**which are on sedatives and drugs**), Perfect angle(** so that it justifies the meaning of the video derived**), plastic surgeons, drugs, syringes, lot of edits, retakes and photoshops and a catchy soundtrack (** which is very important to elevate the mood**) exactly like how the film industry works. It is all fake. But what do we think about a video is how realistic it is and why not replicate it in our everyday boring life because believe it or not our normal life is boring whether you are single or mingle?

Most of the videos on porn doesn't show a condom used during intercourse, which leads to another problem of unsafe sex and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs). We all know Sunny Leone and how many of us would react if we come to know she is in the news. Everyone will be giggling, laughing, and smiling at each other but nobody laughs at a person when he or she watches porn. It is believed to be a great thing anyone should do it in their life at least once. But is it like food, air, or water that you will die without it?

It shows us that life is just about having perfect genitals, perfect sexual experience, perfect orgasms, and perfect satisfaction. The videos don't show us any kind of foreplay before you tend to remove your clothes. It directly starts with both parties being naked. In reality, before all this is showering love and displaying your affection to the other person, building the moment and enjoying it even if it is imperfect. It is not always on how it looks, but how well both the partners enjoy each other's presence. Most importantly the way the porn videos end is entirely different from how it is in real life. If we tend to replicate even 10% of what we see, it is definitely going to turn toils in your relationship.

Many people argue that it relates to sex education, able to communicate to your partner without hesitation and the person feeling less desperate after watching porn. But I would like to disagree on all the points through only one point. It is not about a video that will change the way you enjoy sexual intercourse but it depends on the person how they want to enjoy it. No other medium will help you enhance your experience more than you, yourself. We should not perform any of the activity which makes us feel disgusted at the end. We are the masters of ourselves. I support sex education but this is not how we can do it. More than educating a child about sex, it will tend to create an impact that objectifying any of the sex is completely okay, being aggressive and harsh on the other person is completely okay. But that isn't the case. If you have to enjoy that, it has to come from within not because you learned it from some video.

We need to cherish all moments, good or bad, learn from our mistakes and make sure that we are happy at the end of the day or any morning you wake up. I have stopped watching porn, not because I got bored of watching porn, it is because I came to a point where my brain told it is enough, just like an addiction to a cigarette. There has been enough damage. I think pornography should be banned so that the industry suffers so badly that it doesn't even feel like standing up back again. But banning didn't work too, there are many mirror sites through which you can access it. So, what do you think should be done to protect ourselves, those women, children, and men from being abused just for money?
